Provinces shift vaccination efforts to teens and younger adults as rollout advances

Saskatchewan government still mulling AstraZeneca second dose plans

United States health authorities said they were looking into a small number of reports of heart inflammation among some younger people who received COVID vaccines, with no clear link established for the moment.

The federal government has promised two million doses of Pfizer vaccine will arrive every single week from October, meaning every Australian adult could be vaccinated by Christmas. "The vaccine is included in the age group of 12 years and older".

A day after Canada officially reported partially immunizing 50 per cent of residents against COVID-19, more provinces stepped up efforts to add younger age groups to the vaccinated ranks.

"This past week we marked some incredible milestones in COVID-19 vaccines delivery and vaccination coverage, including delivery of 4.5 million doses of vaccines ahead of the long weekend and reaching 20 million vaccines administered across the country", according to the Public Health Agency of Canada on Saturday.

Several other provinces have already expanded vaccine eligibility to those 12 and over, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta.

Trader Joe's ditches mask mandate for vaccinated customers
Health Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong announces nine new cases of Covid-19 as a 24-hour curfew looms for Suva and Nausori. The tourist town of Branson, Missouri, did so early last month after voting out several mask supporters.

Daily COVID-19 cases have dropped by 25 per cent over the past seven days, Njoo says, and while hospitalizations, deaths and critical-care admissions remain high, those figures are also decreasing.

It was a different story in Manitoba, where record daily case counts and crushing pressure on the health-care system led Premier Brian Pallister to call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for help.

The news announcement said those who choose next week to book their second dose in the coming week, will be getting it at a 10-week interval period, and not the 12-week period which is considered an optimal period. Huyer said anyone who took the first dose of AstraZeneca can be assured they have done their part in reducing the spread of the virus, in protecting themselves and the population and "decreasing the burden of disease".

Williams said the difference is "negligible", but people should consult with a health-care provider or pharmacist in order to make an informed decision. And the cases were more common in males than in females.

Ontario reported just under 1,700 new cases, while Quebec fell below the 500 mark for the first time since last September.
