Boy, 6, killed in road-rage shooting in California

Boy, 6, is killed in road rage shooting 'after his mother gave other driver the finger'

A 6-year-old boy was fatally wounded Friday when a gunman opened fire on the 55 Freeway in Orange on Friday during a road rage incident, according to the California Highway Patrol.

During a press conference, California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olvera said it was an "isolated road rage incident", according to the report.

It's unknown how many rounds were fired and the only description of the suspect vehicle is a white sedan, DeMatteo said.

The 55 Freeway's northbound lane, near Chapman Avenue, was closed May 21 until about 12 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot from a white sedan right before the child's mother pulled over to the shoulder.

The boy's mother was traveling on the northbound freeway with her child in the booster seat when the shooting occurred, CHP officials said. He said the driver of the white sedan shot into the back of the mother's Chevy Cruze sedan and then fled.

Valdivia told the LA Times discovered that the bullet went through the car's trunk, striking the boy.

Paramedics rushed the injured child to nearby Children's Hospital, authorities said.

California governor proposes tax rebate as virus relief

A short time later, an off-duty police officer arrived and performed CPR on the boy, Valdivia said.

"That's when we noticed the blood on the boy", Valdivia said.

"Not sure if there were passengers in that white sedan, but apparently there was a shot fired from that sedan into the silver auto, and unfortunately the child that was seated in the right rear seat was struck".

The mother of the child said they were on the way to school in the carpool lane.

"Even if they don't have video but maybe saw something that might be related, we would love that information, even if they don't think it's important", he said.

CBS Los Angeles reported that there have been almost a dozen pellet and BB gun shootings on freeways across Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties over the past three weeks, but Olivera said Friday's road-rage killing was unrelated to those earlier incidents.

The freeway was shut down for hours as about a dozen investigators slowly walked the lanes looking for evidence.
