Russia school shooting: Children among 11 dead, according to state media

A second gunman suspected of carrying out a school shooting in the central Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday has been killed, news agencies reported, citing official sources.

In February past year the FSB said it had detained two teenagers on suspicion of plotting an attack on a school in the city of Saratov with weapons and homemade explosives.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to families of the victims and those injured in the shooting, and ordered the government to revise gun regulations in light of the attack.

. Khinshtein also said the school didn't have any security aside from a panic button.

Images broadcast on state television from the scene showed dozens of people outside the school building with fire services and police vehicles lining nearby streets.

Eight children and one teacher are reportedly dead.

"Everyone started panicking and saying "shut the doors". "We were led out through the back door to the yard. I wanted to do that, but the teacher closed the window immediately and said no", he said.

Meanwhile, the commission also emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance against the emergence of COVID-19 variants. This would "urgently and temporarily" suspend all inbound travel by non-EU citizens in such a country.

News agencies reported that one person carried out the shooting, a 17-year-old, had been detained.

Officials have confirmed eight deaths.

Rustam Minnikhanov, governor of the Tatarstan republic where Kazan is the capital, said Tuesday that four male and three female eighth-grade students have died in the shooting.

He told reporters outside the school that, in addition to the fatalities, 12 children and four adults were being treated in hospital.

Minnikhanov said a 19-year-old "terrorist" had been arrested. A firearm is registered in his name. Footage posted on social media showed a young man being pinned to the ground outside the school building by a police officer.

Some Russian news agencies reporting two teenage gunmen were involved and others said a sole shooter took part.
