Labour's Sadiq Khan re-elected as London mayor

London mayoral election 2021 result

It was announced Khan had won a second term at 11pm on Saturday, amid earlier suggestions that the declaration would be delayed until Sunday.

Khan's re-election and the re-election of Labour mayors in Manchester, Liverpool, Salford, and Bristol came after a bruising set of results for Labour in local elections in its former heartlands in central and northern England-known as the party's "Red Wall"-which followed a disastrous performance in the 2019 national vote".

Laurence Fox, the former actor and "anti-woke" campaigner, has lost his £10,000 deposit after securing less than two per cent of votes in the London mayoral elections.

Opinion polls had suggested his Conservative rival Shaun Bailey would be a distant second in the race for City Hall. Turnout was lower than at the previous election, at 42 percent.

Labour incumbent Mr Khan took 1,206,034 votes - 55.2% of the vote - after second preferences were taken into account, compared to second place Mr Bailey at 977,601.

A noticeably worn out Khan said in his victory speech: "I promise to strain every sinew, help build a better and brighter future for London, after the dark days of the pandemic and to create a greener, fairer, and safer city for all Londoners, to get the opportunities they need to fulfil their potential".

Khan was first elected mayor of the capital in 2016 in a landslide victory that broke the Conservatives' eight-year hold on City Hall.

Although Khan's Labour party has been seen by British Jews as badly tainted by antisemitism in recent years, Khan himself is seen as friendly to the Jewish community and has spoken out against antisemitism.

He said he wanted "to ensure London can play its part in a national recovery" and to "build a brighter greener and more equal future" for the United Kingdom capital. His record on the issue and other security issues at the time led to a series of Twitter spats with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Analysts attribute this to the city's younger, more ethnically diverse and more pro-European Union population, which unlike most of England, overwhelmingly opposed Brexit.

"And that was the feeling of being written off - by pollsters, by journalists, by fellow politicians".

Entering his first term, Khan vowed to focus on providing affordable homes for Londoners and freezing transport fares, but saw his agenda engulfed by the pandemic.

Delay in troops withdrawal to not go unanswered: Taliban
Before his election defeat, Donald Trump had set 1 May as the date by which all United States military personnel would have left. Clearly having the militants holding positions around Western bases presents a danger if no understanding is reached.
