Canada receives 1M Moderna doses early; 2nd death linked to AstraZeneca

Trudeau tells Canadians not to pick and choose vaccines

Ottawa has not said when it will release the 300-thousand doses of the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine that arrived last week. With Canada set to receive large shipments of doses in upcoming weeks, CTVNews.ca has outlined which groups are recommended to be eligible to receive which vaccines, where they'll be able to get it, and how many doses Canada has received to date and will be receiving in the future.

Procurement Minister Anita Anand says Moderna is continuing to work with the federal government to come up with a more predictable delivery schedule.

Pfizer and BioNTech have been consistently delivering around 1 million doses from Brussels each week since mid-March, but those numbers will double over the next month before increasing further in June. Over 8 million people have received the shot State-side.

The panel's advice contradicts Health Canada's long-standing recommendation that the best vaccine is the first one available.

The Alberta case, of a woman in her 50s, marks the second case of blood clots, and the only death after more than 253,000 doses of AstraZeneca were administered in the province, Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr Deena Hinshaw said in a statement on Tuesday.

Covid: Indian delegates in United Kingdom for G7 talks to self-isolate
A meeting of top Group of Seven diplomats being held in person in London risked being derailed after India's foreign minister S. India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is attending a G7 gathering virtually on Wednesday.

"In comparison, Albertans 50 to 59 who are diagnosed with COVID-19 are 350 times more likely to die from that infection than to experience VITT after an AstraZeneca vaccine".

"While any death is tragic, it is important to remember that the risks of dying or suffering other severe outcomes from COVID-19 remain far greater than the risk following AstraZeneca vaccine", Hinshaw said in a statement. It's Alberta's first death linked to the vaccine.

Niagara Health's Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship and Pandemic Preparedness Lead Dr. Karim Ali says the NACI notion that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are preferable 'flies in the face of what we have been trying to do and achieve'.

"Every single vaccine available in Canada has been approved by Health Canada as safe and effective", Trudeau told a news conference. "We really need Canadians to get vaccinated as quickly as possible".
