He later won wide acclaim and national fame as "America's Mayor" for his efforts in helping New York City deal with and recover from the September 11, 2001 attacks. "Why would you do this to anyone, let alone someone who was the associate attorney general, United States attorney, the mayor of New York City and the personal lawyer to the 45th president of the United States".

Investigators executed warrants at Giuliani's home on Madison Avenue and his office on Park Avenue and seized electronic devices, a person familiar with the investigation told the AP.

Giuliani began representing Trump, a fellow Republican, in April 2018 in connection with former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The full scope of the investigation is unclear, but it at least partly involves Giuliani's dealings in Ukraine, law enforcement officials have told the AP.

Costello said subpoenas indicate investigators are seeking Giuliani's communications with a long list of individuals, including Parnas and Fruman, as well as the journalist John Solomon, who helped amplify Giuliani's claims tied to Ukraine.

"Here we go folks", tweeted Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer of Mr Trump's who was convicted of tax evasion and campaign finance violations, sharing a link to the report. Mr Giuliani had previously called the investigation "pure political persecution".

The Prime Minister also assured that the Centre is working in tandem with states to help get through the second wave. The Prime Minister conceded that the second wave is "testing our patience".

The report listed one possible charge as a violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which, according to the Justice Department, requires individuals lobbying the USA government on behalf of foreign officials to periodically disclose their activities to authorities. Giuliani's alleged lobbying efforts were a primary focus of the first impeachment case against Trump.

A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan and the FBI's NY office declined to comment Wednesday.

The people could not discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. Garland was confirmed last month and U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco was confirmed to her position and sworn in last week.

A lawyer for Giuliani, Bob Costello, confirmed that a search warrant had been executed.
