Andrew Brown Jr.’s family: Police bodycam footage shows ‘execution’

NC City Declares State of Emergency Prior to Bodycam Video Release of Andrew Brown Jr. Shooting

Several peaceful protests took place in the city last week following the shooting. Authorities have released few details, and the video has not been made public.

Cherry-Lassiter said the video shows Brown in his vehicle in his driveway with his hands on the steering wheel as police were shooting at him.

An eyewitness account and emergency scanner traffic had previously indicated Brown was shot in the back as he tried to drive away.

"My dad got executed trying to save his own life", Brown's son, Khalil Ferebee, said after seeing the video of his father's death.

"Let's be clear: this was an execution", Cherry-Lassiter said. "This was an execution".

Lassiter went on to say that they saw one video from one body camera when at least eight officers were there.

"If we don't have transparency we can never get to accountability", said Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer and attorney for the Brown family. "I've never been talked to like I was talked to in there", Sellers said.

Wooten and Cox did not respond to requests for comment.

42, was fatally shot by Pasquotank County sheriff's deputies in Elizabeth City on Wednesday when they attempted to serve him with an arrest warrant, the sheriff's office said. The officers who resigned were not directly connected to the shooting, according to Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy Wooten, but one was close to retirement.

Earlier Monday, a search warrant was released saying deputies obtained the warrant that brought them there after investigators recorded him selling small amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine to an informant. Crump argued that authorities were trying to release negative information about Brown while shielding themselves by holding back the video.

There has been rumors circulating that the National Guard is in Elizabeth City for this event. "Brown also has two pending drug cases in court", the outlet concluded. The document, which indicated the search was not completed, did not list anything found.

Calls have been growing to release the body camera footage, which a judge must authorize in North Carolina.

Attorneys first said they were scheduled to see the footage at 11:30 a.m., but that was delayed after officials said they needed to make redactions. A coalition of media organizations have also sought the footage, and city officials plan to do so as well.

Wooten said last week that the investigation of the shooting has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation, and he said it has the body camera video.

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools will operate on a full remote schedule for all students and staff through Friday "due to the continuously evolving state of civil unrest in our local community and under the advisement of our local law enforcement partners".
