Indonesia searches for missing submarine with 53 on board

Indonesian Navy loses contact with submarine near Bali

In a statement published Wednesday night, the Indonesian Ministry of Defense said the KRI Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine, lost contact during a torpedo drill in the Bali Strait - a stretch of water between the islands of Java and Bali that connects to the Indian Ocean and the Bali Sea.

The Defence Ministry said the submarine lost contact after being granted clearance to dive.

A helicopter looking for the missing vessel spotted an oil spill in waters where the submarine was thought to have submerged, it added.

Officials have called on Australia and Singapore to help in the search, according to Reuters.

Republika reported that the TNI had deployed all ships with underwater search capabilities to help find the missing vessel.

Indonesia's military said it was searching for a submarine with 53 crew aboard after losing contact with the vessel during naval exercises off the coast of Bali on Wednesday.

Guelph police not conducting random stops, clarify role in provincial guideline enforcement
Vaccinations have ramped up in Canada, the presence of more contagious variants in Ontario has led to a third wave of infections. Restaurants and gyms remain closed, and schoolchildren will continue to receive their education via distance learning.

Local media reports said authorities believed the ship sank into a trough at a depth of 700 metres (2,300 feet).

Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto told national paper Kompas that the submarine disappeared in waters about 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of the island of Bali at about 3 a.m. local time. "We know the area but it's quite deep", First Admiral Julius Widjojono said. In 2017, an Argentine military submarine went missing in the southern Atlantic with 44 crew on board.

The 1,395-tonne KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1977, according to the defense ministry, and joined Indonesian fleet in 1981.

The KRI Nanggala was built in 1978 and is the Indonesian navy's second-oldest submarine in its fleet of five boats, having been delivered in the early 1980s and given a comprehensive refit in South Korea in 2012.

In 2015, an Indonesian military transport plane crashed into a northern residential area two minutes after takeoff, killing more than 100 people.
