The death of Mondale, known as a champion of liberal politics, was announced by a family friend and spokeswoman Kathy Tunheim but no specific cause was provided, according to The Washington Post.

He said he was proud of what they accomplished and was comforted knowing that "Joe" is in the White House.

"Dear Team", Mondale wrote.

He wrote that it was becoming clear that his "time has come". I am eager to rejoin Joan and Eleanor.

"Before I Go I wanted to let you know how much you mean to me", he wrote.

After criticism, Biden says he will raise United States cap on refugee admissions
His commitment to the cap, set by his predecessor Donald Trump, drew criticism from lawmakers and refugee advocacy groups. Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Refugee Resettlement, Biden's "initial goal of 62,500 seems unlikely".

"I always knew it would be okay if I arrived some place and was greeted by one of you!"

President Joe Biden, right, and former Vice President Walter Mondale share a laugh during a discussion as part of a tribute to Mondale at George Washington University's Jack Morton Auditorium, October 20 2015. He called him an "invaluable partner", and spoke of how he transformed the role of the vice president. "Through his work as a Senator, he showed me what was possible", Biden said in a statement. Mondale served as Minnesota attorney general from 1960 to 1964 and as its USA senator from 1964 to 1976.

Mondale was USA ambassador to Japan from 1993 and 1996 under the then administration of Bill Clinton, after serving as vice president to Jimmy Carter for four years through January 1981.

Carter mourned Mondale's death, calling him the best vice president in USA history.

Mondale would go on to win the Democratic presidential nomination himself in 1984, and make history by naming a woman, US Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of NY, as his running mate before ultimately falling short to Reagan.
