Vaccinated airport worker tests positive for Covid

The trans Tasman travel bubble means people are able to travel between the two countries without needing to quarantine

The cleaner tested positive just one day after Australians and New Zealanders resumed travel between the two countries without having to quarantine.

"This person has done the right things - they have been regularly tested at their workplace, and we know they have been using the NZ COVID Tracer app, with Bluetooth turned on".

An Auckland Airport worker who has tested positive to coronavirus visited major shopping centres, including a Bunnings Warehouse and Westfield while infected.

She had not spoken to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison yet, but said she would anticipate the border case would not alter the bubble arrangement.

"The usual protocol of isolating the case, interviewing them, and tracing their contacts and movements is underway", says a MOH statement.

Both countries had agreed not to immediately close the border if a case was detected, and Ms Ardern reiterated this today.

The person was tested on April 12, as part of routine testing, and produced a negative result.

Ms Ardern reminded people that those who are vaccinated can still get Covid-19 and that its main benefit is preventing serious illness or death.

Australia until Tuesday recorded 910 deaths since it the pandemic began previous year, while New Zealand has reported only 26.

Highlights of new COVID-19 restrictions in Ontario
However, cabinet ministers decided against imposing a curfew, with some saying that it could cause more harm than good. If we dig in, remain steadfast, we can turn this around, " Doug Ford, Ontario's premier announced on Friday.

According to The Guardian, the New Zealand PM further stated that by no means did it constitute a "leaky border" to have someone who cleans planes carrying infected people test positive.

"In situations like this a lot of pressure gets put on aviation workers and airport workers. sometimes there's a lot of blame put onto them. So regular testing. And it was their most recent test in which this case has been picked up".

"I think everyone's been feeling very constrained, shut down, hemmed in, and the opportunity to actually go somewhere for a holiday [.] is something that now seems such a luxury that it's made an enormous difference to people's psychology".

There are no new community cases of Covid-19 today.

The seven-day rolling average up to yesterday is 4,254 tests processed.

There are currently 86 active cases in New Zealand with 17 previously reported cases now recovered.

The long-awaited travel bubble between the two countries means visitors no longer needed to quarantine on arrival.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health confirmed the individual was now in isolation and the case would not be classified as a locally acquired case and instead a "border case".
