'Situation worsening': Delhi reports 25,500 new cases; CM Kejriwal seeks Centre's help

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal during a press conference

Briefing about the Covid situation in the national capital, Kejriwal said that due to the rapid increase in Covid-19 infections, hospital beds and oxygen for patients are depleting in the city. "I hope that we will be able to add 6,000 more beds in the next two to four days", he added.

Kejriwal who had talked to Union Health Minister Harshvardhan on Saturday, requested the Centre to reserve at least 7,000 of 10,000 beds in hospitals run by it in Delhi as Covid beds and ensure immediate supply of oxygen.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will address an important press conference today amid the alarming spike in coronavirus cases in the national capital.

The number of new cases in Delhi rose from about 19,500 on Friday to 24,000 and Kejriwal said the virus was "spreading really fast". In all, out of 17,531 beds for Covid patients, only 3,382 are available. "We immediately need more oxygen", he added. The city also reported 161 deaths, while the positivity rate shot up to 29.74 per cent, also the highest so far. This means that almost 1 in 3 people getting tested for coronavirus were found to be positive for the infection.

The Delhi government has an app that shows the number of occupied or vacant beds available at hospitals in realtime. We are asking Centre for help and getting it.

India reports record 200,000 new covid-19 cases as outbreak spreads
Unrelated patients share beds, while bodies of the recently deceased lie outside the ward before being taken to the mortuary. The ferocity of the surge in cases - which have increased by a factor of 10 in roughly a month - is overwhelming hospitals.

"Centre has around 10,000 beds in its hospitals and at present, around 1,800 have been reserved for Covid patients".

"Spoke to Dr Harsh Vardhan yesterday and Amit Shah ji this morning regarding lack of beds and informed them that we are in dire need", the Delhi CM said.

CM Kejriwal had on April 15 announced sweeping restrictions in Delhi, including a weekend curfew and the closure of malls, gymnasiums, spas, and auditoriums, in a bid to break the chain of the COVID-19 infection in the national capital.

He said his government has received complaints that some hospitals were denying beds to COVID-19 patients.
