Manchester United and Liverpool new European Superleague push - Premier League official statement

FRANCE-POLITICS

Sunday's UEFA statement said: "The clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams".

A joint statement from UEFA, the English Football Association, the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, LaLiga, the Italian Football Federation and Lega Serie A said they had "learned that a few English, Spanish and Italian clubs may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League".

Gary Neville has said the Premier League sides involved in the breakaway European Super League should be docked points, as he branded it "a criminal act" against football fans.

"If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we".

The statement added that bodies would consider all measures to oppose the Super League, "both judicial and sporting". "Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it can not be any other way", the statement added.

It would mean that the Champions League - which is considered the best and most competitive club competition in the world - would be rivalled by this controversial project.

"And this will come after European clubs' finances have been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic which is one of the reasons why so many of Europe's biggest clubs have decided that now is the right time to form a European super league after years of on/off discussions about such a project".

Twelve of Europe's biggest clubs are reportedly set to announce an agreement for a breakaway European Super League on Sunday, with the Premier League "big six" of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham among them.

Sport was told last week of plans for some sort of confirmation about a European Super League.

The Premier League have already released a statement threatening to ban any team that decides to take part - but an impassioned Neville called for immediate action on air, as he labelled the treatment of fans "criminal".

"This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long".

He added: "In the midst of a pandemic, an economic crisis, football clubs at National League level going bust almost, furloughing players, clubs on the edge in League One and Two - and these lot are having Zoom calls about breaking away and basically creating more greed?" Our success has enabled us to make an unrivalled financial contribution to the domestic football pyramid.

It added such a league would "undermine the appeal of the whole game" and that they would work with the FA, the English Football League, Professional Footballers' Association, League Managers Association and fans to "defend the integrity and future prospects of English football".

"We will work with fans, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA, as well as other stakeholders, at home and overseas, to defend the integrity and future prospects of English football in the best interests of the game".
