Kerry to start climate change talks with China

A vehicle with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry on board arrives to a state guest hotel during his visit in Shanghai China

During his stay in China through Saturday, Kerry is due to meet with Xie Zhenhua, the Chinese government official in charge of climate change policy.

USA officials and analysts say Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry's consultations with his Chinese counterparts this week are paving the way for next week's virtual Leaders Summit on Climate, but caution against a quick breakthrough.

President Joe Biden has made scuttling the climate-sceptic policy of his predecessor Donald Trump a priority.

"We're not trading something to do with the planet and health and security for something else that's more of a political or ideological difference or a practical difference in the marketplace", said Kerry.

He has rejoined the 2015 Paris accord, and is hosting a virtual summit of world leaders next week which the U.S. hopes will result in stronger climate pledges.

In Shanghai, officials are expected to discuss environmental challenges, areas which both China and the United States say are top priorities, as well as the upcoming UN-led climate talks to be held in Glasgow at the end of the year.

The FBI says that Smart, a student at California Polytechnic State University, was last seen at about 2 a.m. on May 25, 1996. A spokesman for the Smart family (pictured holding a photo of Kristin Smart) said "this is an extremely emotional day".

The United States is renewing a call that all nations including the USA and China "must raise their ambitions" on carbon neutrality, as officials from the world's two largest emitters held talks in Shanghai on Thursday.

The US has rejoined the global accord under Biden's administration, that has also pledged to reduce emissions.

The scheme is seen as a key part of the EU's Green Deal, an ambitious push to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and meet the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement.

"Both countries have a long way to go to firm up their targets and commitments for this decade", said Myllyvirta.

All banks with total assets of more than NZ$1 billion ($703 million), insurers with more than NZ$1 billion in total assets under management, and all equity and debt issuers listed on the country's stock exchange will have to make disclosures.

While Beijing and Washington have clashed over Hong Kong and Xinjiang, the climate issue is seen as a shared interest which cuts through the rancour.
