At first Jeremiah Miller and Timothy Boillat thought the sound was from a auto, but after hearing more, Miller stood up and saw a man with a weapon, he told the station.

"Preliminary information is that the alleged shooter has taken his own life here at the scene", she said.

Department spokesperson Genae Cook said when officers arrived they "came in contact with an active shooter incident" and enetered the building while the gunman was still shooting. "We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities".

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis", the statement said.

Several mass shootings have been reported in recent weeks around the US.

It is unclear how many people have been shot at this time or all their conditions, but multiple victims have been transported to various hospitals in the area, Cook said.

On 22 March, 10 people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. The gunman later killed himself.

Paraminder Singh, a family member of one of the victims, told a FOX59 journalist his niece was in her auto when the gunman started shooting at her vehicle.

Some said employees were not allowed to have their phones with them while working shifts at the facility, making it hard to contact them. Her daughter, Jessica, works in the facility, and she had not heard from her. Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

One witness who who said he worked at the facility told WISH-TV he saw a man with a gun after hearing several gunshots.

Live video from local television news outlets after the shooting showed crime scene tape stretched across a parking lot and people being escorted to IndyGo buses.

Another man told WTTV that his niece was sitting in the driver's seat of her vehicle when the gunfire erupted, and she was wounded.

Singh said she called him and told him there had been shots fired in the FedEx building.

He said his niece did not know the shooter.
