United States politician Matt Gaetz says he won't resign over 'false' sex allegations

BREAKING Matt Gaetz SLAMS Washington swamp for trying to'drown him with false accusations

Matt Gaetz has come out swinging back amid the Department of Justice's investigation into allegations that the congressman engaged in sex trafficking of a minor, penning an op-ed saying that he is "not a monk" but also "certainly not a criminal".

Matt Gaetz speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference. An aggressive and high-profile ally of Donald Trump, Gaetz has so far received nearly no public support from his congressional Republican colleagues and none from the former president.

The staunchly pro-Trump lawmaker used very specific phrases to deny having sex with a 17-year-old and paying for sex. McGee and his law firm Beggs & Lane issued a statement last week denying Gaetz's allegations. The Times cited three anonymous sources "briefed on the matter", which alleges that the 38-year-old had a relationship with the girl and paid for her travel at one point. "Neither I nor any other member of Congressman Gaetz's staff had any knowledge of illegal activities".

He also predicted, "I'm sure some partisan crooks in Merrick Garland's Justice Department want to pervert the truth and the law to go after me".

In his op-ed, Gaetz continued to deny any wrongdoing and reiterated - as he has since the initial allegation that he slept with a 17-year-old and subsequent claims that he paid for drug-fueled hotel romps - that he is "absolutely not resigning". The alleged extortion attempt came on March 16, about eight months after the Department of Justice reportedly began its investigation. Gaetz helped lead an unsuccessful battle in January to depose Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, from her job as No 3 House GOP leader. Gaetz and Trump Jr. added their voices to a growing effort to vote Cheney out of office after she voted in favor of impeaching Donald Trump. Nelson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents told him members of the national media were chasing leads that Nelson resigned because he knew about Gaetz's illicit behavior.

BC health officials report 1,889 new COVID-19 cases since Saturday
But the number of cases of the P.1 variant continues to rise, with a total of 737 now confirmed. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.

Gaetz's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nathan Nelson, a military adviser who left Gaetz's office in October, said he was questioned about whether he'd left that job because he knew of Gaetz's "involvement in illegal activities".

"I'm here to state this morning that nothing could be further from the truth", Nelson said at the press conference in front of his home.

No news media outlets have reported that Nelson left his position with Gaetz over the investigation, but FBI agents asking him about it was enough for Nelson to declare all of the news reports on the investigation into Gaetz as baseless, he said.

Nelson left Gaetz's office in late October of a year ago, The New York Post reported, in what he called a "planned departure" in order to support "the military missions in a private capacity" in the Florida Panhandle.
