Toronto schools to close tomorrow for in-person learning until April. 18

Waterloo Region's top doc 'not planning' to close in-person learning at schools

School is out, or online-only at least, in Mississauga and Brampton, as public health authorities seek to stamp out a rash of new COVID-19 cases in the region.

'Each COVID-19 case in a school requires a careful investigation to determine the potential risk to other individuals in that setting, and based on the findings of the investigation, decisions are then made on how best to protect the staff and students in the school, including dismissing some cohorts or all cohorts, ' says Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer of health for Toronto Public Health.

Last week the province said schools would stay open.

Schools in Peel Region are closed for in-person learning starting today.

"The spread of COVID-19 has never been greater in Toronto, with variants of concern increasing both the risk of transmission and the risk of serious illness or death", said the City in a news release.

"In Peel we have 24 schools in outbreak, 15 of them are in Mississauga but schools aren't the source of the spread", said Crombie.

In Toronto, the public health unit says it has recommended the closure of 20 schools as COVID-19 cases are investigated.

EMA official links AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots
Of the 18.1 million people who have had the Oxford vaccine in the United Kingdom , 30 people have developed blood clots . The EMA was already expected to provide an updated assessment this week.

Parents were left scrambling by the late decision, which also prohibits Peel students from attending child-care centres or day camps.

As of Wednesday, all students will pivot to remote learning for the rest of the week, according to the Toronto District School Board.

Students will move to online learning from April 7 through to April 18 after Medical Officer of Health Dr. Dr. Eileen de Villa used her discretionary powers under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act on Tuesday to close schools. "We've been working behind the scenes all weekend to make this happen".

The government of Premier Doug Ford announced a provincewide "emergency brake" last week that did not include closing schools.

The TDSB and TCDSB said in tweets on Monday they are dismissing the schools following advice from TPH.

He says that any further decisions to extend the order will be made, as required.
