Finnish health authorities have confirmed that they are planning to continue use of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for the time being, after a senior official at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) linked the vaccine to blood clots.
EMA head of vaccines Marco Cavaleri told Italy's Il Messaggero newspaper that "in my opinion, we can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the vaccine", although it was not clear what caused such a reaction.
More information will be shared by the agency later today, as Cavaleri said "in the next few hours, we will say that there is a connection, but we still have to understand how this happens", reported the Associated Press via Barron's.
Of the 18.1 million people who have had the Oxford vaccine in the United Kingdom, 30 people have developed blood clots.
European countries such as Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Latvia, and more halted their rollouts in early March, and now countries worldwide are banning the use of the vaccine in anyone under 60 years old.
Asked if the risk-benefit ratio was still in favor of the vaccine, Cavaleri replied, "Yes".
"In my opinion, we can say it now, it is clear there is a link with the- vaccine".

She noted that out of the 346,900 doses of this vaccine that have been administered in Greece, only one "probable" case of the syndrome has been recorded.
"Among the vaccinated, there are more cases of cerebral thrombosis. among young people than we would expect".
An investigation is also underway in the United Kingdom, where researchers are looking at the possibility of links between the AstraZeneca vaccine and rare blood clots.
The EMA was already expected to provide an updated assessment this week. Should the United Kingdom government restrict access to AstraZeneca, the speed of their vaccine rollout could be greatly slowed down.
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) confirmed that of those 30 people, seven had died as of 24 March.
The EMA last week recommended that countries should keep using the AstraZeneca vaccine because the benefits outweighed the risks, as countries including Italy suspended their rollout of the jab.
In Germany, there have been 31 suspected cases of CVST - 19 accompanied by a drop in blood platelets - with nine deaths, according to the Paul-Ehrlich Institute.
