B.C.’s COVID-19 updates for April 3

There were eight new COVID-19 cases listed locally in the tri-county area, according to Monday's report from the Indiana Department of Health.

A total of 90 people are now in intensive care in B.C., Dix and Henry said in their statement.

Another 23 people have died of the disease since Thursday, said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix in a written statement.

There are 8,490 active cases in the province, of which 318 people are hospitalized, with 96 in intensive care.

"The most transmissive variants of COVID-19 are ultimately going to take over".

"We know this virus is constantly changing and some of the new variants can spread more easily, but the same measures we know can still stop the spread and we have safe and effective vaccines on our side now", they said.

A total of 105,941 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines have been administered across the province since Thursday, for an average of about 26,485 per day. "It will be for everyone to judge once it goes live".

He also noted that some individual hospitals are struggling with large numbers of COVID-19 patients, including Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, Surrey Memorial Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.

"The variants are not dissimilar to the rest of COVID-19". As of last week, officials have cancelled indoor dining, in-person worship and group fitness classes.

"I'm not one bit happy about where we are at now", Dix said. People can also book through a Service BC location.
