57,074 more people tested positive in Maharashtra with 1,96,988 tests on Sunday, marking the biggest single-day spike. Notably, India, which is witnessing the second wave of the pandemic, added 5,49,423 Covid-19 cases over the last week, while United States and Brazil logged 4,42,981 and 4,50,268 cases, respectively.

With 50,223 more cases in the last 24 hours, India's total active caseload has reached 7,41,830, and comprises 5.89 per cent of the country's total cases.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state past year, has seen the biggest spike of Coronavirus cases for a month now.

Furthermore, 52,847 people were discharged after recovery on Sunday, taking the nationwide recovery tally to 11,682,136. A total of 249,019,657 samples have been tested so far. It is to mention that a total of 771 cases of coronavirus variants detected across 18 states in the country, said the Union Health Ministry.

It was suggested that a daily analysis of performance should be shared with states and UTs as feedback for corrective actions, the statement said. In addition to vaccination, 7,59,79,651 doses of vaccine have been given so far.

India's per capita COVID-19 vaccinations, however, are lower than many other countries, including that of more populated China that started giving shots to its citizens much earlier.

Last week, the government expanded eligibility for the jab to include those aged 45 or older.
