Ashrafi expresses Pakistan’s support for Jordan’s security, stability

Jordan arrests ex-palace aide, others for ‘security’ reasons

The Washington Post said the former crown prince was "placed under restriction" as part of a probe into an alleged plot to unseat the king.

It gave no further details and said an investigation was under way.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of the Middle East Tahir Ashrafi has expressed Islamabad's solidarity with Jordanian authorities, following an alleged plot to destabilise the country.

In a video sent to the BBC, Prince Hamzah bin Hussein said the army chief of staff had visited him earlier in the day to tell him: "I was not allowed to go out, to communicate with people or meet with them".

"Jordan is normally a stable Arab kingdom that has been a staunch ally of countries in Europe and the USA, particularly when it comes to counterterrorism cooperation in the Middle East", Sweis said.

Labib Kamhawi, a Jordanian analyst, told the Associated Press that Hamzah likely crossed a line for the royal family by indicating he might be an alternative to the long-ruling king.

A security investigation has been launched and a former minister, a junior member of the royal family and unnamed others have been detained.

Hamzah is the eldest son of late King Hussein and his American wife Queen Noor.

He said he has been placed under house arrest.

Taiwan: Dozens feared dead in train crash
The crash occurred near the Toroko Gorge area at around 9 a.m. local time (0100 GMT/UTC) on what is a public holiday in Taiwan . Some carriages hit the wall of the tunnel , as a result of the derailment, the fire department said.

Hamzah had released a video message via the BBC in which he accused Jordan's rulers of nepotism and corruption.

The United States, which is allied with Jordan in its campaign against the Islamic State (IS) group, described the monarch as a key partner who has its full support.

Jordan, whose royal family traces its lineage back to Prophet Muhammad, has been ruled since 1999 by 59-year-old Abdullah II, the oldest son of the revered late King Hussein and his second wife, the British-born Princess Muna. Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, all Sunni-majority countries, have for years aligned together against Shia Iran. Jordan also has strong ties with the U.S., supporting it during the Iraq War as well as its efforts against the Islamic State.

Jordan has few natural resources and its economy has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jordan is also home to more than two million Palestinian refugees, most of whom have Jordanian citizenship.

Stability in Jordan and the status of the king has always been a matter of concern, particularly during the Trump administration, which gave unprecedented support to Israel and sought to isolate the Palestinians, including by slashing funding for Palestinian refugees.

Kuwait's foreign ministry expressed its support to all measures taken by King Abdullah and his crown prince to maintain the security and stability of Jordan, adding "the security and stability of the kingdom are that of Kuwait".

Abdullah stripped his half-brother Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004, saying he had made a decision to "free" him from the "constraints of the position" in order to allow him to take on other responsibilities. Just five years later, in 2004, Abdullah stripped Hamzah of the succession, in favor of his own son, Hussein.
