The accident, which is being termed as the deadliest rail tragedy in decades, took place at 0928 hrs local time (01:28 GMT) on Friday, when a train ferrying 490 passengers derailed inside a tunnel after apparently hitting a truck in Taiwan's Hualien County.
More than fifty people were killed after a train carying more than 500 passengers collided with a truck that slid down an embankment from a nearby construction site.
According to the government's disaster relief centre, the truck's emergency brake was not properly engaged.
The train was carrying almost 500 people and was traveling from the capital Taipei east of Taitung when it derailed in a tunnel just north of Hualien, which also lies along the east coast of Taiwan.
Surviving passengers had to escape the wreck by climbing out of the train's doors and windows, before walking along the transport vehicle's roof to get to safety, the Associated Press reported.
Lee had been released on bail, though the high court's Hualien branch on Sunday rescinded that decision after the prosecutors appealed it, sending the case back to the lower court.
President Tsai Ing-wen visited hospitals near the crash instead of the site itself so as not to interfere with rescue work, her spokesperson said. After questioning by the judge and evidence from prosecutors, he is suspected of causing death by negligence, it said. "I want to express my deep sympathies to the victims' families and to the passengers who were injured", Su told a news conference in Taipei. The accident terrified passengers onboard. "We will surely help them in the aftermath".
Auto rams Capitol barricade, 1 police officer killed; driver shot dead
The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. Biden released the statement from the Camp David president retreat, where he is spending the weekend.
"The court said there was no reason to keep him in custody", she told reporters.
The families of the victims cry as they mourn near Taroko Gorge in Hualien, Taiwan.
Taiwan's transport ministry said two US citizens were among the dead, while two Japanese, an Australian and a Chinese citizen were among the injured.
Speaking at the crash site overlooking the ocean and backed by precipitous mountains, Lin Chia-lung said he would "not avoid" responsibility.
A rescue worker guides others as they remove a part of the derailed train. During the repairs, all east coast trains will run on a track parallel to the one damaged in the accident, causing delays of 15 to 20 minutes, he said.
The TRA on Saturday said it would review its ticket policy as 120 passengers had standing tickets when the derailment occurred on the first day of a four-day break for Taiwan's annual tomb-sweeping tradition, which sees many Taiwanese people return home to pay tribute to their ancestors and clean up family tombs.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives in the railway accident in Taiwan".
