Capitol Police Officer William Evans died 30 minutes after the attack at the hospital. Officers shot Green after the attack, and he died at the hospital.

She said Evans was a member of the division's First Responder's Unit. The suspect was identified as Noah Green.

Police said Green rammed his auto into the officers at 1:02 p.m. and then exited the vehicle and lunged at them.

According to the Capitol's acting police chief, Yogananda Pittman, Noah Green drove a auto into a barricade then emerged from the vehicle with a knife and ran toward two police officers. Multiple sources said one of the officers was stabbed in the face, but it was unclear which officer was stabbed.

The lockdown at the Capitol was lifted about 3 p.m. local time. Within about an hour and a half, police sent another alert saying the threat had been "neutralized".

US President Joe Biden said he was heartbroken by the death of the police officer, Reuters reported. "As we mourn the loss of yet another courageous Capitol Police officer, I have ordered that the White House flags be lowered to half-staff". He was 41 years old and served for almost two decades in the US Capitol Police Force.

Fully vaccinated Americans can resume travel, updated CDC guidance states
It is expected that the US will surpass 100 million people who have received at least one dose of vaccine Friday. The new advice comes after months of the CDC urging all Americans to avoid any kind of non-essential travel.

"At a time of such suffering, no words are adequate". The White House said that the president had been receiving updates about the incident as investigation progresses. Officer Evans made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the Capitol.

The question of security at the Capitol has generated a heated debate in Congress amid a highly politicised environment following the Jan 6 riot and former president Donald Trump's role in inciting his supporters to violence. The National Guard was deployed to the Capitol shortly after the incident to assist Capitol Police officers who were lining the perimeter of the building.

The union representing the officers called Friday's attack "a tragic situation that adds to a very hard year for our membership". "Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones". "I think everything is going to be re-evaluated after today", he said. Capitol police have been through so much and have barely begun the healing process since the attack on the Capitol on January 6th.

Reports have also emerged identifying him as a follower of Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan, who has been described as an anti-Semite by anti-hate organization ADL. The National Guard was seen responding to Friday's attack, and later confirmed it had been deployed to the Capitol.

The barricade where the incident occurred is a checkpoint on the Senate side of the Capitol.

Marino said incidents like this, which is believed to be a "lone wolf" attack, may be hard to prevent, but the security system in place worked "exactly how it should".
