Auto rams into barricade outside US Capitol, killing police officer

Police officers gather near a car that crashed into a barrier on Capitol Hill in Washington Friday

Members of the National Guard stand along streets surrounding the U.S. Capitol and congressional office buildings following a security threat at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., April 2, 2021.

The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said in a tweet shortly before 1:30 p.m. ET they are "responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers". "This has been an extremely hard time for USA after Jan 6 riots", the Capitol Police said. Robert Contee, the acting D.C. police chief, said the incident "does not appear to be terrorism-related" and that there was no indication of a "nexus to a member of Congress".

The White House released a statement from President Joe Biden addressing the attack on the United States Capitol on Friday.

The other injured officer is being treated an area hospital.

The incident occurred barely three months after an increased National Guard presence and heightened security in the wake of the January 6 riot at the Capitol.

The suspect is reported to have emerged from the vehicle brandishing a knife before being shot by a police officer.

Speaking to MSNBC, and confirming some of the details of what took place, one Capitol Hill Police officer reportedly told the outlet: "We've been attacked".

At the time Trump's supporters shouted slogans including "Stop the Steal" and "Hang Mike Pence" as they attacked the Capitol and said they hoped to stop the election certification.

The official could not discuss an ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Congress is now on recess.

The complex was locked down in the aftermath of the January 6 riot, and a National Guard contingent of around 2,300 troops was still stationed in the area as of Friday.

Video emerging from the scene showed police and emergency response vehicles responding.

The incident occurred as both the House and Senate were in recess, though both buildings have staff - and reporters - working inside.
