Police in southern California report shooting with multiple victims, fatalities

Police officers outside the building in Orange California on 31 March 2021

"Tonight around 5:30 pm officers arrived to a call of shots fired at the area of 202 W. Lincoln", Amat said during a news conference, adding that officers encountered gunshots at the scene.

"An officer-involved shooting occurred" and the suspect was taken to a hospital, Amat said, but she didn't immediately know his condition. Police provided no details on the victims other than to say one was a child and a woman was critically wounded.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted his condolences following early reports of the shooting.

"Our hearts are with the families impacted by this awful tragedy tonight", he wrote.

A fifth person was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound, Lt. Jennifer Amat said. Some facts reported by the media may later turn out to be wrong. The police department said in a message posted to its Facebook page that the situation had since been "stabilized" with no further threat to the public.

113 ships cross Suez Canal, investigation on MV EVER GIVEN stranding begins
The owners and insurers of the ship could be looking at claims totalling millions of dollars, Reuters reported. They also ruled out any mechanical or engine failure as a cause.

Rep. Katie Porter, a California Democrat whose district includes the city of Orange, said on Twitter that she was "deeply saddened" by reports of the shooting.

It also led to officers firing shots, authorities said. Eight people - many of them Asian Americans - were killed inside spas in Atlanta, Georgia, on 16 March, while 10 people were shot dead in a Colorado grocery store on 22 March.

Amat said the shooting was the worst in the city since December 1997, when a gunman armed with an assault rifle attacked a California Department of Transportation maintenance yard.

Orange, a city of about 140,000 residents, is located about 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
