McCarthy calls allegations against Gaetz 'serious,' plans to speak with him

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz claims sex trafficking investigation is extortion attempt

"It if comes out to be true, yes, we would remove him if that was the case". He followed up by pressing Gaetz on the identity of the 17-year-old girl he allegedly had a relationship with, but the Florida Republican claimed the "person doesn't exist".

The elder Gaetz said he was going to wear a wire and meet with one individual involved in this alleged plot on Wednesday, but that "fell apart" after news of the DOJ investigation broke.

Gaetz said he has provided financially for former sexual partners but said he was "absolutely" confident none of them were underage.

Some Democrats have called for his committee positions to be revoked.

Carlson quickly denied any recollection of the dinner with Gaetz: "I don't remember the woman you are speaking of or the context at all, honestly".

As for Tucker Carlson, who I can imagine could expect a call from the Federal Bureau of Investigation pretty soon, his permanent expression of utter bewilderment seemed to actually be genuine confusion for once. "I don't quite understand it".

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has confirmed he is being investigated by the Justice Department, but denied the allegations tied to the inquiry.

A subject is conventionally thought of as someone whose actions fall within the scope of a criminal investigation, whereas a target is someone whom prosecutors have gathered evidence linking to a crime.

Gaetz: 'Sexual Conduct' Probe Is Based on False Allegations
Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, according to the report. He demanded the Justice Department release the recordings. The investigators are looking into whether Mr.

The interview on "Tucker Carlson Tonight" capped off a stunning few hours of news about the Florida lawmaker, who had been investigated for months in secret by Justice Department officials. The lawyer has been in private practice for more than two decades.

"Over the past several weeks, my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name", Gaetz tweeted. "I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicates their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations". McGee's biography on the firm's website says he spent six years as first assistant at a United States attorney's office and seven years as the lead attorney for the DOJ's Organized Crime Task Force.

Gaetz told Carlson that his family had been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the extortion attempt, and that his father had even worn a wire. The paper reported that a variety of federal statutes makes it illegal to take part in such activities and that the Justice Department regularly prosecutes cases of that nature.

'No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation, ' he said. The sources said the Gaetz investigation was connected to the investigation of Gaetz associate Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector in Florida who was indicted past year on charges including sex trafficking of a child.

As one DOJ veteran told Insider, the timeline doesn't necessarily mean Gaetz's claims of an extortion scheme are untrue, but it does indicate the department's probe was not launched as a result of any such scheme.

"The allegations against me are as searing as they are false", Gaetz, who represents Florida's 1st Congressional District, told Axios.

"Providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you're dating who are of legal age is not a crime", he told Carlson. "You were accused of something you did not do so you know what this feels like". I do believe there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to smear me.

There was no mention of Gaetz in the indictment, which provided no further information about the sex trafficking charges against Greenberg.
