'We need to brace ourselves': New COVID cases expected

Cars lined up at a drive-through Covid-19 testing clinic at the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay

But she said residents should brace themselves for new cases after it was revealed two COVID-19 cases from Brisbane visited various venues in Byron Bay at the weekend, before they were diagnosed but while they were infectious.

The new case is a man who didn't attend but is connected to a hen party that took place in Byron Bay last weekend and is linked to a number of Covid cases in Queensland.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she "would not be surprised" if infections were detected in NSW. Until the end of Easter, those four local government areas will be subject to some restrictions.

Berejiklian also said the Government's "strong preference" was that people in the four local government areas don't travel to other parts of the state. The nurse had received her first vaccine dose.

"We're asking everybody to be alert, to make sure you get tested if you have the mildest of symptoms", Ms Berejiklian said.

A government spokesperson told AAP on Wednesday morning that more cases were expected to emerge as a second nurse at the Princess Alexandra Hospital has tested positive.

The Brisbane hospital was placed into an emergency lockdown yesterday, after an alert to staff.

Mexico says Covid-19 deaths likely 60% higher than official count
Workers on horseback late past year in the Valle de Chalco municipal cemetery on the outskirts of Mexico City. Also suggestive were the overall number of "excess deaths" since the pandemic began, around 417,000.

"Everyone at the Byron Beach Hotel will be asked to quarantine for the full 14 days and get a test at the beginning and that test that people have done - can I thank you for doing it so promptly, it helps us assess the risk of transmission in that venue, but you are required to stay in isolation for the full 14 days and we will be advising you to get a test prior to exiting your isolation period", the Health Minister said.

There are now 2.5 million people in a three-day lockdown in Greater Brisbane, however it is still uncertain whether the lockdown will be lifted or extended over Easter and also be expanded to the Gold Coast.

She also urged people in NSW to cancel any Easter holidays to Queensland, warning them they could get trapped there if the Brisbane lockdown was extended.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the state's health authorities are due to decide on a possible extension of the lockdown this evening, but previously warned a further escalation of cases could see the directive pushed back. I think that's probably our highest. "We want all of those limited", she said.

"So if we see the same number of test results tomorrow, this is very, very encouraging news".

"[But it's] absolutely critical that we rule out any unlinked community transmission of COVID in our community".
