Matt Gaetz Denies Allegations, Claims He's Victim Of Extortion

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said Tuesday he is under investigation for alleged sex trafficking of an underage girl claiming the allegations are part of an extortion attempt involving a former Justice Department employee. File

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida appeared on Tucker Carlson's show on Tuesday and denied allegations that he had sexual relations with a seventeen-year-old before naming a DOJ official who had attempted to extort his family for millions of dollars.

The New York Times first reported Tuesday that Gaetz, 38, is being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him, possibly violating federal sex trafficking laws.

Remarkably, the investigation is not the only time Gaetz has taken heat over sex trafficking.

The report was published hours after Axios reported Gaetz is considering leaving Congress to join Newsmax, a conservative cable network. He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false".

Republican congressman Matt Gaetz.

"On March 16th, my father got a text message demanding a meeting wherein a person demanded $25 million in exchange for making disgusting sex trafficking allegations against me go away". The investigation was launched by the DOJ under former Attorney General Bill Barr in the final months of the Trump administration, the Times reported.

Investigators are examining whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, the people said. But it certainly showed this is a deeply interesting story and we will be following it.

Gaetz said he has provided financially for former sexual partners but said he was "absolutely" confident none of them were underage.

Vill said she was intimidated by the governor and essentially froze during the incident due to their height differential. He has said his behavior was meant to be playful and harmless, and he's apologized if he ever made anyone uncomfortable.

'Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25million while threatening to smear my name, ' Gaetz said in a statement. He demanded the Justice Department release the recordings.

"I'm not the only person on screen right now who has been falsely accused of a awful sex act", Gaetz said.

Gaetz accused McGee live on Carlson's show of trying to extort millions of dollars out of him and his family in exchange for "making awful sex trafficking allegations against me go away".

The three NYT sources also said that the investigation is part of a broader investigation into a political ally, a local official in Florida named Joel Greenberg, who was indicted a year ago on charges including sex trafficking of a child and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.

Gaetz said his family has been cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and said his father was wearing a recording device, at the FBI's direction, "to catch these criminals".

With a puzzled look on his face, Carlson responded, "You just referred to a mentally ill viewer who accused me of a sex crime 20 years ago".

"No part of the allegations against me are true and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation", he wrote. I do believe there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to smear me. Gaetz has not been charged "and the extent of his criminal exposure is unclear", according to the Times. "He should not be sitting on a Congressional Committee with oversight over the DOJ while the Department is investigating him", Lieu tweeted immediately following the story.
