According to Tuesday evening report from the New York Times, the investigation was launched during President Donald Trump's term, under former-attorney general William Barr, and focuses on an alleged 2019 relationship between Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl.

The investigators are looking into whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, according to the report. Under US law, it is illegal to entice a minor to cross state lines to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money or anything of value, and it leads to severe sentences. He demanded the Justice Department release the recordings.

Three sources told the Times that the investigation into Gaetz is part of a broader probe into Gaetz' ally, former Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg, who is facing a slew of charges, including sex trafficking of a child.

There was one point during the interview where Gaetz brought up a dinner he and Carlson had once that included a friend of his who was "threatened by the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

"I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know when I was a single guy", he reportedly said. "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward", Gaetz said in a statement.

"I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I've dated". No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets. of the ongoing extortion investigation. "I don't think that clarified much, but it certainly showed this is a deeply interesting story and we'll be following it".

The Republican representative took it to Twitter on Tuesday to express his concerns over the probe, adding that he and his father had been working on an extortion case involving "a former DOJ official seeking $25 million" with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for weeks.

"I can say that actually you and I went to dinner about two years ago, your wife was there, and I brought a friend of mine".

"I don't remember the woman you're speaking of, or the context at all, honestly", responded Carlson.

Axios also reported Tuesday that Gaetz was eyeing an early exit from Congress to join Newsmax. "The planted leak to the FBI tonight was meant to thwart that investigation", he continued.

"The allegations against me are as searing as they are false", Gaetz added in a phone interview with Axios.
