113 ships cross Suez Canal, investigation on MV EVER GIVEN stranding begins

Suez Ship Makes It into Microsoft Flight Simulator

At least three days are necessary to resolve the "traffic jam" of ships in the Suez Canal after the blockage incident with the container ship Ever Given, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Tuesday.

Clearing the ships that built up at the Suez Canal could take four days, although catching up at ports will take longer, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said.

Shipping convoys through the canal resumed on Monday evening after tugs pulled the 400-meter-long (430-yard) Ever Given container carrier free from the spot where it became wedged on March 23. The owners and insurers of the ship could be looking at claims totalling millions of dollars, Reuters reported.

The vessel's technical managers, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, said on Monday that its initial investigations suggested it had veered off course due to strong wind.

Linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, the Suez Canal is a major lifeline for global seaborne trade since it allows ships to travel between Europe and South Asia without navigating around Africa, thereby reducing the sea voyage distance between Europe and India by about 7,000 km. They also ruled out any mechanical or engine failure as a cause.

On Tuesday, investigators boarded the ship, which is in a lake that separates two sections of the canal, according to a canal source and a shipping agent who did not give further details.

The series of night-time images were all acquired with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite that offers another view of ships waiting in the Gulf of Suez. The TikTok video showed a pilot's eye view of the stuck cargo ship, as featured in the flight simulator. "So it will mean delays there".

"All of this will ripple through the supply chain", he warned.
