Alberta spent more than $15M on COVID-19-related ad campaigns

COVID-19: Dr. Deena Hinshaw to provide update Thursday afternoon

Across Alberta, another 717 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded Friday, with 325 of them being cases of a variant of concern - the highest amount recorded in a day so far.

Total COVID-19 cases in Alberta, including active and recovered, have almost doubled within a week, jumping to 2,110 Wednesday from 1,097 on March 17.

Across the province, 284 people were being treated in hospital for the disease, including 59 in intensive care beds.

In the last 24 hours, two new deaths have been reported to Alberta Health.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, reminded Albertans to be vigilant and follow health measures as COVID-19 cases continue to rise.

About 1,400 of the active cases are linked to the variants of concern, which make up 20 per cent of the total, she added.

Number of new COVID-19 cases in BC surges to 716
With the latest infections from Wednesday's update, there have now been 93,969 total known cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Of the active cases, 303 individuals are now hospitalized with COVID-19, 85 of whom are in intensive care.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Theresa Tam, Hinshaw's federal counterpart, said variant cases have been increasing throughout Canada, with the highest numbers in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

The next reopening stage would have included relaxed rules on worship services. "Obviously variants are also an additional metric to watch but there's no single metric that will tell us when we need to implement something or not".

The ad campaign, aimed at Albertans aged 40 and below, was meant to teach lessons about how easily COVID-19 could be spread in everyday situations.

"There is no other activity that even comes close to that proportion of our new cases", she said.

"I hope we don't have to do that, and really the single most powerful way we could prevent that is vaccines".

She also urged people who can not properly isolate at home to stay in designated hotel rooms free of charge.
