Daily COVID-19 cases in Ontario soar to over 2,000, another 17 deaths

The variant first detected in Britain is the most common one in Ontario, though variants first detected in South Africa and Brazil have also appeared across the province.

The province reported 60,077 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 3.8 per cent positivity rate.

Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted, "Ontario is reporting 2,380 cases of #COVID19 and almost 60,100 tests completed".

The new cases were among 800 coronavirus cases found across the province over the past 24 hours, bringing B.C.'s total to 94,769 cases since the pandemic began.

The province's top doctor has said the variant cases are causing more severe illness, leading to intensive care admissions and deaths.

894 people are now hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 893 reported yesterday.

Ontario is in a "precarious situation" when it comes to COVID-19 trends.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 7,377 cases of COVID-19 with 6,687 of those cases recovered and 195 cases ending in death.
