COVID-19: More than 200 variant cases in Alberta Wednesday breaks record

"I appeal to every citizen who is 45 or above to register for vaccination", Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said, announcing the cabinet decision to expand the drive that started in January.

Alberta Health Services has now administered more than 500,000 vaccine doses, the health minister said Wednesday. It was allowed to be taken between four to six weeks earlier, but scientists have now said that taking the second dose between four and eight weeks gives improved results.

The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 for those who are over 60 years of age and for people aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

"We request that all eligible people should immediately register from April 1 and get vaccinated, as it is the shield against the disease", Javadekar told reporters.

Javadekar also informed that as per the advice by scientists and world scientist bodies, the second dose can be administered between the fourth and eighth week, particularly for COVISHIELD.

There were a total of 692 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta on Wednesday and two more people have died. The minister said he was confident that vaccination will increase at a fast pace.
