Major severe weather outbreak expected in South, tornadoes possible

A potential severe weather outbreak is forecast across the South

Mostly cloudy skies this morning should start to clear out a little bit by midday. For that reason, we can't completely rule out a stray shower today.

Stage 5 - HIGH (magenta) - High risk - An area where a severe weather outbreak is expected from either numerous intense and long-tracked tornadoes or a long-lived derecho-producing thunderstorm complex that produces hurricane-force wind gusts and widespread damage.

A strong storm will move out of the southwestern United States and move across southern Texas by early Thursday morning. If any sunshine breaks out south of the warm front, it will act to heat the air and destabilize the atmosphere even more, bolstering the risk of strong to severe storms.

Thursday we are monitoring a potential severe weather day, mainly to our west.

The National Weather Service is also particularly concerned about the rain - there could be a lot of it and it could lead to flash flooding. Where the warm front lands is still in question.

In addition, a line of severe storms looks to move through tomorrow evening. All threats will be possible, but the focus will be on damaging winds and large hail.

The latest forecast shows an "enhanced risk" for severe storms across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama. Simultaneously, a storm system ejecting from the Great Basin of Nevada and diving over the Four Corners region will work as a triggering mechanism to induce severe storms by Thursday. While unlikely severe, this does set up for a long, rainy day for much of the Midwest.

After a quiet weekend, we've got plenty of chances for rain and storms in the forecast for first week of spring.

The areas in dark green have a marginal risk (Level 1) for severe weather today.
