A Second World War-era plane flew Saturday over the funeral service of Capt. Sir Tom Moore to honour the veteran who single-handedly raised millions of dollars for Britain's health workers by walking laps in his backyard.
His Union Flag-draped coffin was carried by soldiers from the regiment into the crematorium in Bedford, eastern England, past empty pews due to coronavirus restrictions.
Soldiers performed ceremonial duties at the service for the 100-year-old, whose charity walk inspired the nation and raised nearly 33 million pounds ($46 million.) Captain Tom, as he became known, died February 2 in the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

A World War II veteran who has raised millions of pounds for charity by walking around his garden on Friday became the oldest man to top the United Kingdom music charts - just days from his 100th birthday. Captain Tom, as he became known, died February 2 in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.
He raised almost £33 million for healthcare charities by completing 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday in April a year ago.
His death was marked by a nationwide clap with Prime Minister Boris Johnson taking part and MPs bowing their heads in Parliament.
The funeral cortege arrives
In one of the highlights of the service, a special recording by Michael Buble of the song "Smile" was played before Captain Sir Tom's daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore, 52, paid her own moving tribute.
The private service was small, attended by just eight members of the veteran's immediate family.
Sir Tom asked that My Way by Frank Sinatra be played at his funeral and that his epitaph reads "I told you I was old", in reference to comedian Spike Milligan's famous epitaph "I told you I was ill".
Once Covid-19 restrictions permit, the family plan to inter Moore's ashes in Yorkshire, northern England, where he will rest with his parents and grandparents.
She said she had received many messages from well-wishers, and that it was "wonderful" to see people writing in an online book of condolence.
"Your courage and determination to reach your goal and the money you raised for the NHS was unbelievable", wrote Sandra Norbrun.
Moore was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in July in a physically distanced ceremony at Windsor Castle, west of London.
