Minimum Wage Hike Looks Doomed

Democrats push for $15 minimum wage as House set to consider stimulus bill

The decision marks a significant blow for Democrats who were hoping to pass the policy through budget reconciliation, a fast-track process that allows some bills to be passed with simply majority rather than the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster.

If the parliamentarian decides the minimum wage provision can remain in the bill, it would be a major boost for its proponents.

The Senate parliamentarian ruled that a plan to gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2025 does not fit the complicated rules that govern budget bills in the Senate.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee praised the ruling, saying it was the appropriate path to protect the rules of the Senate.

A Heritage Foundation study on the impact of a $15 minimum wage concluded it would increase child care costs by as much as 43 percent in some states. "I put it in, but I don't think it's going to survive", he recently told CBS News.

A bill that would incrementally increase Utah's minimum wage to a peak of $15 an hour by July 2026 stalled in a House committee on Thursday, as Republicans anxious it would kill jobs and hurt the economy prevailed over Democrats who said it would help lift people out of poverty. One possibility is to overrule the Parliamentarian. However, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain publicly stated that the Biden administration would not support such a move. "A million Americans would come out of poverty, and 30% of those minimum wage workers are Black; 25% are Latinx", Jayapal told Bash. For instance, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said that he will offer an amendment to the reconciliation bill that would "take tax deductions away from large, profitable corporations that don't pay workers at least $15 an hour and to provide small businesses with the incentives they need to raise wages".

The minimum wage has stood at $7.25 since 2009.

Employers would face increased civil and criminal penalties for hiring unauthorized aliens and/or violating I-9 paperwork requirements.

Twenty-nine states have adopted minimum wages higher than the federal rate, including all six of Pennsylvania's immediate neighbors. That would shoot up to $4.95 per hour this year.

Khanna made the remarks in an interview on CNN's "Inside Politics", in response to a question about how hard it might be for many small businesses to afford increased labor costs, if the federal minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour.

"Hey Senator Capito! 63% of West Virginians support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025". That would change under the House bill. They won't have the same kind of savings as someone who is making more than minimum wage.

"We are deeply disappointed in this decision", Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement.

A decision by the parliamentarian that the minimum wage hike must fall from the bill could be fatal, but not necessarily. That's why for the Democratic causes the two most important priorities were making sure we had survival checks that went to the same, you know, group of people that got them last time and that we kept the thresholds the same and also minimum wage. President Biden is expected to release another economic stimulus plan in March. Perhaps a minimum wage increase will be included in that proposal. So, maybe a compromise can be negotiated that will gain enough support to get through Congress.
