For coronavirus survivors, one vaccine dose may be enough, early studies show

Japan's immunization campaign has been slowed down by requests from the Ministry of Health to hold local clinical trials in order to "confirm the effect of the vaccine on Japanese people".

"Across the Scottish population, the results show a substantial effect on reducing the risk of admission to hospital from a single dose of vaccine".

It found that vaccination was associated with an 80% reduction in hospitalization risk in the fourth week among those aged 80 years and over, when the results for both vaccines were combined.

The data was collected between December 8 and February 15.

The drugmakers' remarks put the United States on track toreceive 240 million doses by the end of March, enough toinoculate 130 million Americans, and 700 million doses bymid-year, more than enough to dose the entire USA population. But I expect that, once we account for the bias, we'll still find that this vaccine does reduce transmission.

Best-case forecasts consider vaccine deliveries from AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Novavax and estimate 64 per cent of the population could be fully vaccinated by the end of June.

The majority of older people in the study - who are among those at highest risk of severe disease and death from Covid-19 - were more likely to have had the AstraZeneca jab. They caution that the data does not allow for comparisons between the two.

Israel says vaccination is the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority (PA), but it received further criticism last week for preventing the PA from sending vaccine doses to the blockaded Gaza Strip.

While nearly 100 million people around the world have received at least one dose of a vaccine, Japan is the last nation in the G-7 to begin vaccinations. We must not be complacent, though. These workers are tested for COVID-19 every two weeks regardless of symptoms.

"It's important that we have consistency, we're always provisioning for the second doses".

Lead researcher Prof Aziz Sheikh said the results were "very, very" impressive and both vaccines were working "spectacularly".

"All frontline health care workers have gone through a lot in the last 12 months and we have seen lots of patients come into the hospital, we've looked after them and we've seen some deaths and we've had to deal with our own fear of coming down with the virus as well", Professor Stuart told Today.

Ireland is line to receive around 2.2 million doses to begin with, meaning that together with the supplies of Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca, the country will be able to administer vaccines to the entire population, with plenty to spare.

Overall, the vaccination program in Scotland has cut hospital admissions by more than 85 percent, according to the study.

"Importantly, the data used in this research is accessible via the HDR Innovation Gateway; supporting the UK's research community by making health datasets easily discoverable and accessible".

The data from Public Health England (PHE) and Public Health Scotland (PHS) has been published on the day the government in England has set out its roadmap for lifting restrictions.
