Attorney: Equality Act Unfair for People of Faith

Nancy Pelosi Chuck Schumer Tammy Baldwin Equality Act

This isn't the first time the Equality Act's been to this rodeo - it passed the House in 2019, and there were attempts to pass it going back to 2015. All 221 Democrats voted in favor of the bill while all but three Republicans voted in opposition.

Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene - one of the fiercest opponents of the bill - tried to halt passage of the legislation on the House floor.

Who supports and opposes the act?

In remarks on the House floor Thursday morning, Rep. Andrew S. Clyde (R-Ga.) repeatedly referred to transgender women as "biological males" and said the Equality Act would violate women's right to privacy and safety in locker rooms and showers.

"Human dignity is central to what Catholics believe because every person is made in the image of God and should be treated accordingly, with respect and compassion", they continued.

"This is not controversial anymore", he said.

Merkley said the Equality Act "is about freedom".

"Today, LGBTQs are not free - in 29 states today it is still legal to discriminate", he noted.

Katko said he supported the bill, in part, because it would set uniform standards against discrimination in all states.

The House just voted by a slim margin to approve the Equality Act, 224 to 206. Not because Republicans really care about the issue, but because of the photo opportunities.

Nonetheless, LGBTQ leaders were pleased with the House vote. Only together can we combat hateful discrimination that undermines our democracy.

Biden To Give $4 Billion To COVAX, Global COVID-19 Vaccine Effort
Along with rolling out safe and proven vaccines, we must also work towards a diverse vaccine portfolio. World Health Organization is helping countries ramp-up sequencing capacities to detect new variants.

According to Steube, the Equality Act "goes directly against what it laid out in scripture". She told CBN News, "We can see [the Biden Equality Act] would immediately be stripping religious Americans and stripping girls and women of our equal rights".

"We are here to uphold the abiding truth of the American experiment - that we are all created equal, and that none of us should be evicted, fired or denied accommodations and services simply because of who we are and whom we love". "I urge the Senate to expeditiously pass this critically important legislation".

Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, who is the chair of the most conservative caucus in the House, railed against the legislation, saying it would be a "devastating attack on humanity".

Religious leaders are anxious about the Equality Act, which is expected to pass in the House, because it makes no provision for religious objections and some warn that it could outlaw standing up for traditional views on marriage. "The historic vote today also builds upon the legacy of the activists who helped pass the original Civil Rights Act in 1964".

Now Democrats, with control of both chambers, are hoping to send the bill to the desk of President Joe Biden, who has promised to sign it.

Advocates for the act have argued that the current "patchwork" of state anti-discrimination laws does not provide enough comprehensive protection, and leaves many LGBT individuals at risk. The Equality Act has received strong support from the business and manufacturing community.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently tweeted his approval on the upcoming Equality Act in the US House of Representatives, asking the Congress to "get it done".

Instead, he said, he wanted the Senate to act in a "bipartisan fashion" as it had with other legislation ending forms of discrimination in the workplace. "This is a partisan piece of legislation - it has no Republican co-sponsors in the House". "Unfortunately, the commitments that were made to me were not [given] a year ago".

"Let me be clear - Log Cabin Republicans is not now, nor will it ever retreat on our commitment for equality for the LGBT community - the transgender community included", Moran stated.

Democrats, on the other hand, have spoken passionately about the importance of protecting LGBTQ+ constituents.
