Canada vows to follow Australia in making Facebook pay for news content

The document stems from a 2018 Treasury Department order to Australia's competition and consumer agency to investigate the impact of tech giants on the struggling news media environment.

Facebook announced this week that it would curtail Australian publishers' abilities to share or post content on its pages and limit Australian users from viewing or sharing global publishers' links and posts.

Facebook restored some government pages later, but those of several charity, nonprofit and even neighbourhood groups remained dark. Traffic to Australian news sites from Facebook alone plummeted from 21 per cent to 2 per cent within Australia, and from 30 per cent to 4 per cent outside the country.

I would just say to Facebook, this is Australia you want to do business here you work according to our rules, and that's a reasonable proposition.

"I said to them on you can get an ad to me on your platforms in about two seconds but you're telling me you can't identify violent and extremist material and you can't get rid of it?"
