Ontario extends Stay at Home orders for Toronto and Peel

A lockdown and stay at home order is being extended in Toronto until at least March 8.

Ford said residents in the three shutdown areas shouldn't travel to neighbouring reopened regions for services.

Ottawa is reporting 65 new COVID-19 cases Friday.

When asked about those projections, Ford said his government is being cautious in the hardest-hit areas and regions with fewer cases can't be compared with hot spots like Toronto.

Lambton Public Health region meanwhile is moving from the Orange-Restrict level to the Red-Control level as a result worsening public health trends in the region over the past week.

Toronto officials asked the provincial government this week to extend the lockdown after Toronto's medical officer of health said she has never been more anxious about the future because of new coronavirus variants.

Even in the strictest level of the province's reopening framework, some businesses would be allowed to reopen with capacity limits.

The unexpected reductions in supply and delayed shipments in early February forced Ontario to quickly adjust its vaccination plan to accelerate its focus on vaccinating the province's highest risk resident populations.

The appointments will likely begin in March, said retired Gen. Rick Hillier, who is leading the vaccine rollout.

Provincial officials also said they're preparing an online and telephone-based booking system as the vaccine becomes available for the general public, though they could not confirm at what point the online-booking system will be ready for the public.

The province continues to expand capacity and ramp up efforts for Phase Two of its vaccination rollout, expected to begin in April 2021.

The province was to receive close to 157,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine this week and says it expects its weekly supply from the company to range between 173,000 and 186,000 doses through the end of March.

Doses of the Moderna vaccine for next week will be lower than expected, at 47,400, but supply is expected to increase in March.

Ontario confirmed 1,150 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, after 1,038 infections were reported on Thursday.

Last week, Ontario reached its target to offer a first dose of the vaccine to residents of all long-term care homes across the province and has now administered over 167,000 doses to long-term care and retirement home residents.
