Over 0.8 inch of ice has been reported in some places just south of Portland and 2 to 3 inches of snow have already fallen in both Portland and Seattle, with more expected to come. An ice storm warning is in effect for portions of western OR, making travel almost impossible.
Snow and ice could crop up in parts of the midstate this weekend, but worse storms are on the horizon, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued Saturday morning by the National Weather Service. Significant snow is expected in Oklahoma. More sleet may enter the mix as precipitation gets steadier and even some snowflakes in our northwest areas.
IMPACTS: Travel could be very hard, especially by Sunday night into Monday.
SATURDAY: Areas of rain or light freezing rain mainly during the first half of the day. Travel will be very unsafe as ice accumulates in the region. Although there may be some snowflakes to start (perhaps enough for a coating), with time the precipitation turns more toward sleet and freezing rain. By Tuesday, the storm will have spread into the Northeast.
While piercing wind gusts are to be expected in these higher elevations, cities such as Portland and Seattle will be fanned by 25 to 40 miles per hour gusts during the passing of these storms, bringing wind chills in the respective cities down to the teens at times.
Parts of New Jersey could get a coating of ice with a wintry mix of freezing rain snow and rain expected over the weekend and into Monday
This is when the combination of the storm track, moisture and cold air can work together to produce as much as 6 inches in the Seattle metro and an additional 4 inches in the Portland metro, which is about what those cities average in a year. Anywhere where there is ice, there is a risk of serious impacts to travel, power lines and trees. Temperatures hold steady, with lows mainly in the mid-20s to near freezing.
ABC's Travis Herzog at KTRK is saying this cold weather could break records.
"Lots of winter weather". The NWS Weather Prediction Center is calling this a "once in a decade" event.
Overall, temperatures will be almost 50 degrees below average in some parts of the USA through the first half of the upcoming week. Chicago has not been above freezing since February 4.
