Australian Open: Chaos as players, officials isolate after Australia Covid case

Australian Open: More than 500 to isolate after COVID case at hotel

The city is enduring new restrictions which has thrown the Australian Open into chaos after a hotel quarantine worker tested positive on Wednesday, with health chiefs fearing he has the highly-infectious mutant strain.

Now fears are growing over five people in New South Wales who were staying at another quarantine hotel, where the mutant United Kingdom strain slipped between hotel rooms.

The season's first Grand Slam, starting Monday, has already had a rocky build-up after it was delayed three weeks to allow players to quarantine and play the warm-up tournaments.

A 26-year-old man has tested positive for Covid-19 - believed to be the United Kingdom strain of the virus - after working at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Melbourne's Central Business District, Andrews said.

Five people staying at the same hotel at the time are now in NSW, with officials concerned the virus spread through air-conditioning vents or around open doors.

"There will be no matches at Melbourne Park on Thursday".

"So, if there was any exposure, they would be coming up to that period".

'Passengers will be screened for symptoms of COVID-19 and asked if they have been to any of the venues of concern listed by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, ' NSW Health's Jeremy McAnulty said.

On Wednesday, health authorities confirmed the transmission of a coronavirus case between guests in separate hotel quarantine rooms.

Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien said the government must make a call in the next couple of days about whether the Open could go ahead.

After Prude's death, Warren suspended seven police officers over the incident, and fired the police chief, La'Ron Singletary. He said police responded to a call Friday about "family trouble" at a residence in northern Rochester just before 3:30 p.m.

Ms D'Ath said it had been 28 days since the last known case from the cluster, with a total of six people testing positive to the highly-infectious United Kingdom strain that escaped the hotel quarantine site.

Queensland is also on high alert and monitoring the situation in Victoria very closely.

"We are not declaring Victoria a hotspot. or putting any border restrictions in place,"Ms D'Ath said".

NSW, which now has 50 active cases, remains on track to ease restrictions on February 12.

Victoria is going back to the same restrictions the state had over New Year's Eve from 11:59pm on Wednesday night.

Fitted face masks are again mandatory for public indoor areas, with an exception for eating and drinking.

A single case of Covid-19 at a quarantine hotel in Melbourne will force the Australian Open organizers to isolate up to 600 players, officials and support staff, just four days before the tennis championship is set to begin.

The man last worked at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne on January 29 and anyone there was considered a casual contact.

An upcoming increase of workplace occupancy to 75% has been postponed, with workplaces in the public and private sectors required to remain at 50% occupancy until further notice.
