Ontario reports 313 new COVID-19 cases, one additional death

Community spread is the source of 19 per cent of the cases and travel is connected with 13 per cent, including one recent death. "It is the responsibility of each of us to take steps immediately to halt this alarming trend", OHA president and CEO Anthony Dale said in the release.

Premier Doug Ford did little to calm growing worry when asked Monday whether Ontario was facing a second wave.

Public health experts all seem to agree that a second wave in the COVID-19 pandemic is coming on fast, and the Ontario government assures that this time we'll be prepared.

Ontario is reporting 251 new cases of COVID-19.

Fifty-seven per cent of new cases were in people aged 39 or younger.

"But I think it's fair to say that the second wave is going to be more complicated and more hard to deal with than the first wave".

Elliott noted more than three-quarters of the cases are from three regions with 112 in Toronto, 71 in Peel Region, and 60 in Ottawa.

"The most common answer is social gatherings", he said.

Israel to begin three-week nationwide lockdown on Rosh Hashanah eve
With lockdown starting on the eve of the Jewish New Year, the PM said, "These are not the holidays we are used to". People will not be allowed more than 500 metres from their homes, with the exception of travelling to workplaces.

"We'd still like it lower but let's see how it goes over the course of the week", Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams told CP24 after announcing Tuesday's number live on the air.

Ford blamed social gatherings on the rise in numbers mostly in the three urban hot spots and urged people to avoid gathering in large groups, noting the province is looking at existing gathering size restrictions now that limit outdoor gatherings to 100 and indoors to 50.

"Today's numbers are a cause for concern for all of us", said Ford. Ontario has not reversed course on its reopening but the provincial government has deferred any further loosening of restrictions for at least four weeks.

Cases have been on an upswing since mid-August, with numbers above 200 since September 12.

"Yes, this is concerning".

"If we can delay the gratification of the need for intense socializing for several months, our reward will be less suffering, less death and a more open society".

He said Ontarians must continue to wash their hands frequently, practice physical distancing, wear face masks when required, stay home when sick, and neither host nor attend unsafe gatherings or parties. "So we're going to look at it regionally and it shouldn't affect the North". "Ultimately, skipping a dinner party or a wedding that isn't safe is a very small sacrifice to make to protect our loved ones and people who are particularly vulnerable to the threat of COVID-19", Dale said.
