South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg told authorities that he thought he hit a deer after striking and killing a pedestrian Saturday night, according to the state highway patrol.

Saturday Ravnsborg reported that he hit a deer with his auto but that's definitely not what happened. Ravnsborg's revelation that he had found the body of the man, 55-year-old Joseph Boever, was the latest twist in a grim incident where information has come out slowly. Noem stated, I am fully cooperating with the investigation and I fully intend to continue to do so moving forward. Nemec doesn't think Ravnsborg called 911, because no sirens were heard leaving Highmore on Saturday night.

Victor Nemec, Boever's cousin, said in an interview with the Argus Leader that the attorney general "hit my cousin as he was walking down the side of the road and killed him".

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation will aide in the investigation.

"I don't know if cousin Joe was laying on the highway for 22 hours or if they had bagged him up before that", Nick Nemec said.

"I am shocked and filled with sorrow following the events of last night", Ravnsborg, a Republican, said in a statement obtained by The Mitchell Republic. The Department of Public Safety said the investigation is ongoing.

Investigators have not determined if speeding was a factor in Saturday's accident. The circumstances of the accident and the amount of time it took for the body to be discovered and identified has raised concerns for the victim's family members.

Ravnsborg was driving home from a GOP event, the Lincoln Day Dinner, at about 10:30 p.m. when the incident happened near Highmore. Boever told his cousin that he had been reaching for some tobacco.

Boever's body was discovered the next day. He said he was supposed to go back to his cousin's home on Sunday to assist in fixing the truck.

He was also cited for a seat belt violation in 2017 and paid a $25 fine, according to state records.
