Neymar among five sent off as Marseille end long PSG curse

Marseille's French defender Jordan Amavi is held back as Marseille's and Paris Saint-Germain's players scuffle

Brazilian star Neymar was one of five players sent off in the dying embers of Le Classique as Marseille came out winners on the day.

Andre Villas-Boas' side were leading 1-0 when a brawl ensued in the middle of the pitch.

Before uncovering what Gonzalez had allegedly called him on the field, Neymar also tweeted: 'My only regret is not hitting that a****** in the face'. "What we saw, what was visible, is that [Angel] Di Maria spat [on Gonzalez]".

But Neymar pleaded his case to the fourth official, saying he was the target of racial epithets from Gonzalez.

However, Neymar was quick to respond and said Gonzalez "has no character" in a fiery rant.

In a later tweet, Neymar said "It is easy for the VAR to see my "aggression" and added he was subjected to offensive insults of a racist nature. Now insulting and bringing racism into our lives no, I don't agree.

It was Marseille's first victory over PSG since a 3-0 home win in November 2011.

Having been excused from duty for the first two rounds of 2020-21 due to their exertions in the delayed Champions League knockout stages, Thomas Tuchel's men were back in action this weekend as they welcomed l'OM to Parc des Princes.

The returning players ensured PSG started the better side and could have taken the lead three minutes into the match after Idriss Gueye beat his marker and unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the box but Steve Mandanda in goal made a superb save.

"The fight is something very serious".

Angel Di Maria's effort for PSG was ruled out in the 62nd minute and Marseille substitute Dario Benedetto's scorcher was also scrapped two minutes later as Thauvin, who unleashed the initial shot, was marginally behind the last PSG defender. "We will have to look at everything to take a coherent stance but the situation is serious".

PSG sporting director Leandro criticzed referee Jerome Brisard for not keeping control of the match.
