Billionaire Steve Cohen to buy New York Mets for massive sum

The New York Mets are changing hands. Cohen will own 95 percent of the franchise, should the deal go through.

They rejoiced less, however, when the initial sale to minority owner Steve Cohen was squashed on the one-yard line (due to disagreements over Wilpon's continued involvement, among other things) and then kicked further down the road by the pandemic.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman was the first to report the sale, which, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, is a record for a North American sports franchise. That would make it the most paid for an Major League Baseball franchise, topping the $2.15 billion paid for the Los Angeles Dodgers and surrounding real estate.

The deal requires approval from 23 other Major League Baseball owners. A vote is scheduled to take place during the owners' meetings in November.

Rockets' House out for playoffs after having guest in hotel room
Seattle Seahawks' rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand was released after trying to sneak a woman into the team hotel back in August. No other players or staff members had contact with the guest or were involved in the incident, the league said.

Cohen would become one of the richest team owners in professional sports, with a personal net worth of more than $14 billion, according to Forbes.

The Wilpon and Katz families have owned at least a portion of the Mets since 1980 and at least 50% since 1986. The agreement fell apart amid concerns that Jeff Wilpon, the team's chief operating officer and the son of majority owner Fred Wilpon, wanted to enforce a clause in the contract that allowed him to remain in his current position for five years rather than treat it as an honorary role.

This news will be unwelcome to Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez, who hadn't given up hope on sneaking in at the last minute to make a deal.
