WHO urges mothers to breastfeed even if infected with COVID-19

Impact of coronavirus will be felt for decades to come WHO says

On Friday, the Emergency Committee on covid-19 met and reviewed the current pandemic.

He said he carried a mask and hand sanitiser with him at all times.

More than 18.14 million people around the world are reported to have been infected with the disease and 688,080 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus attends a news conference organized by Geneva Association of United Nations Correspondents (ACANU) amid the COVID-19 outbreak, caused by the novel coronavirus, at the World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva Switzerland July 3, 2020.

"Many countries that believed they were past the worst are now grappling with new outbreaks".

"We did focus in the early days of this crisis on really driving our technical and operational assistance to countries that we would traditionally feel that need that assistance", he said.

"A number of vaccines are now in phase three clinical trials and we all hope to have a number of effective vaccines that can help prevent people from infection", said Ghebreyesus.

The WHO head said that, while the coronavirus was the biggest health emergency since the early 20th century, the global scramble for a vaccine was also "unprecedented".

Russia Will Start Mass COVID Vaccinations in October
The vaccine is essentially a common cold virus fused with the spike protein of SARS CoV-2 to prompt an immune response. Murashko said that upon approval, the vaccine would be available first to health care workers, then teachers.

What Tedros didn't acknowledge, however, was his own confusion as far back as early January as to the threat posed by the deadly virus and its origins in China.

The committee also advised countries to strengthen public health surveillance for case identification and contact tracing, including in low-resource, vulnerable, or high-risk settings and to maintain essential health services with sufficient funding, supplies, and human resources.

The virus has hit over 17 million people, with global daily cases now approaching the 300,000 mark.

He said that since the onset of the virus, many scientific questions had been resolved, and many remain unanswered.

The pandemic has spurred a race for a vaccine with several Chinese companies at the forefront, while Russian Federation has set a target date of September to roll out its own vaccine.

"We must all learn to live with the virus", he said, "and to take the steps necessary to live our lives while protecting ourselves and others - especially those at highest risk of Covid-19".

"It's sobering to think that six months ago, when you recommended I declare a PHEIC, there were less than 100 cases and no deaths outside China", he said Friday.
