U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives at 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, on July 21, 2020.

The New York Times, which first reported the alleged Russian bounties in Afghanistan, said Moscow may have been retaliating for the strike in which hundreds of pro-Damascus fighters were believed to have been killed, including numerous Russian mercenaries.

Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., has subpoenaed the State Department for documents it has turned over to Senate Republicans investigating Joe Biden.

In so doing, the State Department under Pompeo has replied promptly to the Senate GOPers requests for documents and information.

Pompeo's testimony came a day after President Donald Trump told an interviewer he had not raised the bounty allegations in numerous phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite concerns about them from the intelligence community.

"The U.S. administration actually supports an increase in lethal aid", said Pompeo, answering a question about lethal assistance to Ukraine.

However, Democrats seized the opportunity to criticize Pompeo and his decisions on foreign policy.

Menendez, a vocal critic of Pompeo, challenged him about the Russian threats and Wednesday's announcement by the Trump administration about the redeployment of several thousand USA troop s from Germany.

Speaking about the QUAD alliance (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), Pompeo said that US" diplomats have "worked wonderful', adding that the Department of Justice is cracking down on Chinese intellectual property threats.

Numerous critics, including some former Trump administration officials, have said Trump's self-acknowledged personal affinity for Putin has undercut US efforts to both counter Russian aggression and enlist allies to join its cause. He said there was a lot discussions with "friends in the region" about the shape it would take. They claim that trump has provided lethal weapons to Ukraine to counter Russian Federation, at that time, Obama gave nothing to her. "We're taking seriously the threats that the Russians will engage in disinformation campaigns".

He said that with its incursions into the territories of its neighbours, China is "testing the world" and "probing to see if we are going to stand up to their threats, to their bullying".

Pompeo told senators that the "incursion" against India and the "real-estate claim" against Bhutan and other conflicts around the world were indicative of Chinese intentions to expand their reach and to bring "socialism with Chinese characteristics" to the world.

Most important, on China, we see the Chinese Communist Party also for what it is- the central threat of our times.
