Nick Kyrgios withdraws from US Open over coronavirus concerns

39;It would be silly to expect nobody would break the rules and the protocols'

Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka have committed to playing in the US Open but world number one Ashleigh Barty of Australia says she will skip the tournament.

US Open organizers say they are confident in safety plans a month ahead of the Grand Slam tennis event in NY even as US COVID-19 outbreaks increase.

He becomes the second high-profile Australian tennis player to announce he will be staying away from the New York-based tournament, following this week's statement by women's world number one Ash Barty.

"Let's take a breath here and remember what's important, which is health and safety as a community", said Kyrgios.

"My team and I have decided that we won't be travelling to the US for the Western and Southern Open and the US Open this year", she told the Herald Sun on Thursday.

An emotional Nick Kyrgios pulled out of the US Open yesterday for "the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their lives" because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Working with our Medical Advisory Group and security team and the State of NY, we have developed a strong health and safety plan to mitigate the risk of infection within the contained environment comprised of the tournament site and player hotels", the USTA said.

"That's what this virus is about", Kyrgios said.

USA entering 'different' phase of coronavirus outbreak
Deborah Birx warned the United States is in another phase of the pandemic as more widespread cases have been reported . If people wear masks and avoid crowds, Mr Giroir said, it gives the same outcome as a complete shutdown.

"I don't know how many opportunities I'll have left to play in Slams, so while I'm feeling relatively decent, I want to try to play in them and enjoy the biggest events again". For my Aussies. For the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their lives. I am speaking for the guy who works in the restaurants, the cleaners and the locker room attendants.

"These are the people that need their jobs back the most and fair play to them".

Kyrgios responded by telling his fellow players (via the BBC), "You have to act in the interest of each other and work together".

"You can't be dancing on tables, money-grabbing your way around Europe or trying to make a quick buck hosting an exhibition - that's just so selfish".

"That's just so selfish".

"Think of other people for once".

The lack of safe distancing measures and the staging of after-event parties led to positive Covid-19 tests for the world No. 1 and fellow players Viktor Troicki, Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric.

On Thursday, Barty said she did not feel comfortable about travelling during the coronavirus pandemic as she pulled the pin on the USA slam.
