Israel army hits squad 'placing explosives' along Syria frontier

The four-member cell planted improvised explosive devices inside an unmanned Israel Defense Forces (IDF) outpost along the border with Syria.

The terrorists were spotted by a special commando unit of Israeli soldiers lying in ambush who saw them as they were planting the explosives along the security fence.

The IDF said it holds the Syrian regime responsible for all events on Syrian soil and will not tolerate any violation of Israeli sovereignty.

"Any attack against us will be met with great strength", he said.

Israeli military also released a video on Twitter, purportedly showing the incident. No Israelis were injured, it added.

There was no immediate response from Syria.

A picture taken from the Israeli side of the Blue Line that separates Israel and Lebanon shows smoke billowing above Mount Dov on the Israeli-Lebanese border, after reports of clashes between the IDF and Hezbollah in the area, on July 27, 2020.

"I believe in the coming days we'll know better about what organization they were a part of", IDF spokesman Hidai Zilberman told reporters.

In addition to plotting a bomb attack, some of the men were armed, according to an IDF spokesman, which said it had not confirmed their identities.

The army said a search of the area was being carried out.

Bracing for the attack, the IDF sent an infantry battalion to the Northern Command as reinforcements, along with additional "advanced" firepower in the form of precision-guided surface-to-surface missiles, combat intelligence units and special forces.

Hezbollah's attack was in retaliation for the death of one a Hezbollah fighters in an alleged Israeli airstrike in Syria last week, the Reuters news agency reported. Simultaneous firing on the squad that numbered four terrorists hit them.

Last week, Israeli officials said the army thwarted an attempted breach of the border with Lebanon by Hezbollah fighters, a claim the group disputed. Hezbollah later denied that an attack had taken place at the site - that in fact, any incident at all had taken place at the site.

Tensions are already high between bitter rivals Israel and Syria.

Tensions have risen in recent weeks along the Israel-Syria frontier after a fighter belonging the Iran-backed Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah was killed in an apparent Israeli air attack on the outskirts of Damascus.
