A Top QB Goes on COVID List

Detroit Lions DT John Atkins opts out of 2020 NFL season

The Detroit Lions have placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The list is for players who have either tested positive or have come into close contact with an individual who has tested positive.

Before he can return to the Lions training facility, Stafford and his family will have some hard decisions to consider. The 32-year-old Stafford is easily one of the most high-profile players to land there.

If Stafford elects to opt-out of the 2020 season, he will have 72 to 96 hours (Tuesday or Wednesday) to make that decision, per an updated timeline reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Expect 'lengthy' coronavirus pandemic, WHO warns
The warning comes after new evidence has suggested that people who have mild symptoms of COVID-19 can end up with long-term health issues.

The second National Football League quarterback placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after the Falcons' Danny Etling, Stafford is the initial starting quarterback to be placed. The NFL's agreement with the players association prohibits releasing medical information about players.

Stafford's wife Kelly had surgery a year ago to remove a brain tumor. Hockenson also hit the reserve group earlier this week.

A model of consistency for much of his career, Stafford had his streak of 136 consecutive starts snapped last season due to a back injury. Jacksonville defensive end Lerentee McCray went on the reserve/opt-out list too. "I was honored to be involved in our team's social justice efforts during this offseason, and I look forward to continuing to support those affected in any way I can".
